Anatha Attar
My paintings are like dreams. Just as we may project onto a dream image
what is inside us, every individual will have a unique response to a
painting. They may have come through me and be a symbol of my story, but
ultimately the paintings are a new message for each heart.
I grew up in the Eastern Orthodox Church and was trained in
Christian iconography. Iconography taught me art as
meditation. I paint in silence or listen to chants from many
world faiths. The painting flows best when my mind is empty
and the chanting brings me to the sacred present moment.
Original paintings are made on high grade plywood prepared
with seven to twelve coats of white gesso, wet-sanded until the
surface becomes like marble. Hundreds of washes, thin coats
of paint, are applied until a smooth image is created. Gold leaf
is applied last in many of my works and the painting is
varnished for a clear durable finish.
The Every Day Mystic series is inspired by my life story and
painted in memory of my father. Many of the images emerged
from childhood memories, love of travel, sacred teachings.
I have included in my works of art, paintings from the temple
motifs of Asia. The Buddhist and Hindu paintings are from the
traditions of India, Thailand and Bali. These sacred images not
only beautify our outer environment but invite us into the
sacred, still place within ourselves.
